REVISED Schedule for WEEKEND Dual Lane Closures on Rockville Pike (MD 355)

The Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation (MCDOT) plans the following DUAL lane closures THIS WEEKEND AND NEXT WEEKEND – weather permitting — on Rockville Pike between Woodmont Avenue and Wilson Drive (near NIH, Walter Reed, and the Medical Center Metro Station):

  • Two NORTHBOUND lanes will be closed from 10:00 PM Friday, May 5 (TONIGHT) through late afternoon TOMORROW, Saturday May 6. (This changes the previously announced schedule that would have closed these lanes through 5L00 AM Monday the 8th.)
  • As previously announced, two lanes TBD will be closed between 10:00 PM Friday, May 12 through 5:00 AM Monday, May 15 — weather permitting. More details will be provided later.

These lane closures are required during construction of the Multimodal Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station and Naval Support Activity Bethesda (NSAB). The Crossing Project will include a pedestrian underpass beneath Rockville Pike and deep elevators to the Metrorail mezzanine on the east side of Rockville Pike. Construction of the Crossing Project will continue through mid-2021.


Lane closure on Rockville Pike (MD 355) near NIH & Medical Center Metro Station

Please note the following planned SOUTHBOUND lane closure of Rockville Pike (MD355) near the Medical Center Metro Station in Bethesda. The following lane closure will take place for approximately one week on weekdays only, BEGINNING WEDNESDAY MAY 3 (weather permitting) and continuing for approximately one week:  The SOUTHBOUND TURNING LANE on Rockville Pike from South Drive, and the adjacent SOUTHBOUND TRAVEL LANE will be closed from 9:00 AM thru 3:00 PM. 

This planned lane closure is part of the ongoing construction of the MD 355 (Rockville Pike) Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station.  The Crossing Project, managed by the Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation (MCDOT), will construct a pedestrian underpass beneath Rockville Pike and deep elevators to the Metrorail mezzanine on the east side of Rockville Pike at the entrance to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Naval Support Activity Bethesda (NSAB).

Please note that this lane closure is in addition to a previously announced WEEKEND DUAL LANE CLOSURE of Rockville Pike between Woodmont Avenue and Wilson Drive  from 10:00 PM Friday, May 5 thru 5:00 AM Monday, May 8.


MCDOT Plans Four Weeks of Dual Lane Closures on Rockville Pike in April and May; Plan to Accommodate Traffic Throughout the Construction Project Also Outlined

The Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation (MCDOT) plans four weekends of dual lane closures on Rockville Pike between Woodmont Avenue and Wilson Drive (NIH) in Bethesda during late April and early May. The lane closures will occur beginning Friday at 10 p.m. through 5 a.m. Monday, weather and progress of work permitting.

The dual lane closures are planned to occur:

  • Friday night April 21 through early Monday April 24;
  • Friday night April 28 through early Monday May 1;
  • Friday night May 5 through early Monday May 8; and
  • Friday night May 12 through early Monday May 15.

MCDOT to Close Two Lanes on Rockville Pike Near Medical Center Metro Station Overnight, April 9-13

For Immediate Release: Monday, April 3, 2017

As part of the construction of the Multimodal Crossing Project to construct a pedestrian underpass at the Medical Center Metro Station, MCDOT will be closing two lanes of Rockville Pike overnight between Wilson Drive and Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda, weather permitting, from April 9 through April 12. There is a possibility that the closures will also occur on April 13.

 The closures will occur between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.  The closure schedule will affect the lanes indicated below:

  • Sunday, April 9:  The two right-most NORTHBOUND lanes
  • Monday, April 10:  The two left-most NORTHBOUND lanes
  • Tuesday April 11:  The two left-most SOUTHBOUND lanes.
  • Wednesday April 12:  The two right-most SOUTHBOUND lanes.
  • Only if necessary, Thursday April 13: Lanes to be determined.
