Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) to close some lanes of Old Georgetown Road (MD 187) near NIH and West Cedar Lane for the next two weekends, July 21-24 and July 28-31

Update:

RESCHEDULED: Lane Closures Planned for Old Georgetown Road near NIH for two weekends:  July 28-31 and August 4-7

Beginning this Friday night, July 21, at 8 p.m., SHA will close two lanes on northbound and southbound MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) from Johnson Avenue to Sonoma Road for an ongoing construction project, the BRAC-related Intersection Improvement Project at MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) @ West Cedar Lane.  Weather and progress permitting, all lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday July 24.

The lane closures will be used to construct roadway bus pads (the concrete directly in front of a bus stop).   All lanes will remain closed for the safety of work crews and to allow concrete time to cure (dry).

Crews will repeat the lane closures next Friday, June 28, at 8 p.m. for additional bus pad construction.  All lanes will reopen no later than 5 a.m. the following Monday, July 31.  Motorists should add extra commute time and use alternate routes.  Equipment used for construction may be disruptive.

First Test Blast for MD 355 Crossing Project scheduled for Wed. July 19, between 10:00 and 11:00 AM

Please note that the first controlled test blast for the MD 355/Rockville Pike Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station is scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, between 10:00 and 11:00 AM.

Traffic on MD 355 will be halted between Jones Bridge Road and South Wood Drive approximately ten minutes prior to the single blast, and alarms will sound five minutes prior to the blast. Roads will re-open shortly after the blast and an ” All Clear” horn has sounded.

Alarms will be heard, and minimal blast vibrations may be felt, by people in the immediate vicinity of the blast.

Controlled blasting will be used for the excavation of a deep elevator shaft on the Navy side of Rockville Pike that will connect to the Metrorail mezzanine.  The Crossing Project will also include a shallow pedestrian tunnel beneath Rockville Pike to provide safe and efficient crossing for bus and carpool riders and neighborhood pedestrians and bicyclists.
