MD 355 Crossing Project Update This Week: Lane Closures and Controlled Blast

UPDATE on MD 355 Crossing Project

You can’t fool Mother Nature!

Due to changing weather conditions, weather permitting, two lanes of Rockville Pike (MD 355) will be closed OVERNIGHT THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 (NOT Tuesday or Wednesday as previously announced) from 10:00 PM Thursday Sept. 7 through 5:00 AM Friday Sept. 8, between Wilson Drive (NIH) and Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda. The lane closures will vary in order to install a new crosswalk across the road at the Medical Center Metro Station.   The dual lane closure likely will start in the southbound lanes and move west to east to the northbound side.

In addition, weather permitting, a single controlled blast is planned for FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 (NOT Thursday) between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.  A warning siren will sound approximately five minutes before the blast and traffic on Rockville Pike will be halted in both directions for ten minutes between Jones Bridge Road and the NIH entrance and the Navy’s South Gate at South Drive/South Wood Drive.  It is anticipated that minimal blast vibrations or noise from the warning siren may be detected by people within the immediate vicinity of the blast site.

And finally, weather permitting, the right-hand SOUTHBOUND lane of Rockville Pike will be closed FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 between 9:30 AM and 3:00 PM between Wilson Drive and Woodmont Avenue.  There will be no impact to any of the bus/shuttle stops in that area, and both South Drive and Gateway Drive will remain open.

All of this work is part of the ongoing construction of the Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station, which will establish a shallow pedestrian underpass between NIH and Naval Support Activity Bethesda/Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and deep elevators on the Navy side of MD 355 to the Metrorail mezzanine.  Construction of the Crossing Project is anticipated through 2021.

Please note that the area of Rockville Pike near the Medical Center Metro Station, NIH and NSAB/Walter Reed is a construction zone.  Please pay attention to all signs, and drive, walk or bike carefully through the area.
