The Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation will close ONE SOUTHBOUND LANE of Rockville Pike (MD 355) between Woodmont Avenue and Wilson Drive, near the Medical Center Metro Station, NIH, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Naval Support Activity Bethesda.
Weather permitting, ONE SOUTHBOUND LANE will be closed between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, through July 28, 2017.
In addition, test blasting for the excavation of an elevator shaft is planned for three days. Weather permitting, test blasts will be conducted Wednesday July 19, Thursday July 20, and Monday July 24. There will be a single explosive blast each day sometime between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM. Alarm horns will sound five minutes prior to each blast and traffic will be halted on Rockville Pike between Jones Bridge Road and South Wood Drive (Navy Gate #2) for approximately 10 minutes. It is anticipated that very minimal vibrations will be felt, and the alarm horns will be heard only by people in the immediate vicinity.
This work is part of the ongoing construction of the Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station, which will establish a shallow pedestrian underpass between NIH and Walter Reed, and deep elevators on the Navy side of MD 355 to the Metrorail mezzanine. Construction of the Crossing Project is anticipated through mid-2021.
The area of Rockville Pike near the Medical Center Metro Station, NIH and Walter Reed is a construction zone. Please pay attention to all signs, and drive, walk or bike carefully through the area.
