Lane Closures on Rockville Pike in Bethesda at NIH/Walter Reed:
10:00 PM Friday, June 2 through 5:00 AM Monday, June 5, 2017

The Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation will close TWO SOUTHBOUND LEFT LANES and THE NORTHBOUND LEFT LANE of Rockville Pike (MD 355) between Woodmont Avenue and Center Drive, near the Medical Center Metro Station, NIH, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Naval Support Activity Bethesda.

Weather permitting, these two southbound lanes and one northbound lane will be closed starting at 10:00 PM on Friday June 2 through 5:00 AM on Monday June 5, 2017.

These lane closures are part of the ongoing construction of the Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station, which will establish a shallow pedestrian underpass between NIH and Walter Reed, and deep elevators on the Navy side of MD 355 to the Metrorail mezzanine. Construction of the Crossing Project is anticipated through mid-2021.

The area of Rockville Pike near the Medical Center Metro Station, NIH and Walter Reed is a construction zone. Please pay attention to all signs, and drive, walk or bike carefully through the area.


Two lanes of Rockville Pike (MD 355) near Walter Reed/NIH to be closed overnight from 10:00 PM May 25 through 5:00 AM May 26

The Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation will close two northbound lanes of Rockville Pike (MD 355) between Woodmont Avenue and Center Drive, near the Medical Center Metro Station, NIH, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Naval Support Activity Bethesda.

Weather permitting, these two northbound lanes will be closed starting at 10:00 PM on Thursday May 25 and will reopen at 5:00 AM on Friday May 26.  No lane closures are planned for Memorial Day Weekend.

These lane closures are part of the ongoing construction of the Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station, which will establish a shallow pedestrian underpass between NIH and Walter Reed, and deep elevators on the Navy side of MD 355 to the Metrorail mezzanine.  Construction of the Crossing Project is anticipated through mid-2021.

The Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation will close two northbound lanes and one southbound lane of Rockville Pike (MD 355) between Woodmont Avenue and Center Drive, near the Medical Center Metro Station, NIH, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Naval Support Activity Bethesda.

Weather permitting, these two northbound lanes and one southbound lane will be closed starting at 10:00 PM on Friday May 19 through 5:00 AM on Monday May 22.  The northbound lanes to be closed will be one travel lane and one left-turn lane.  The southbound lane to be closed will be the left travel lane.

REVISED Schedule for WEEKEND Dual Lane Closures on Rockville Pike (MD 355)

The Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation (MCDOT) plans the following DUAL lane closures THIS WEEKEND AND NEXT WEEKEND – weather permitting — on Rockville Pike between Woodmont Avenue and Wilson Drive (near NIH, Walter Reed, and the Medical Center Metro Station):

  • Two NORTHBOUND lanes will be closed from 10:00 PM Friday, May 5 (TONIGHT) through late afternoon TOMORROW, Saturday May 6. (This changes the previously announced schedule that would have closed these lanes through 5L00 AM Monday the 8th.)
  • As previously announced, two lanes TBD will be closed between 10:00 PM Friday, May 12 through 5:00 AM Monday, May 15 — weather permitting. More details will be provided later.

These lane closures are required during construction of the Multimodal Crossing Project at the Medical Center Metro Station and Naval Support Activity Bethesda (NSAB). The Crossing Project will include a pedestrian underpass beneath Rockville Pike and deep elevators to the Metrorail mezzanine on the east side of Rockville Pike. Construction of the Crossing Project will continue through mid-2021.
